IMDb.com, the Earth's biggest movie database, today unveiled the top 25 stars of 2005 as determined by the site's STARmeter, which ranks celebrities' popularity among IMDb.com's more than 30 million unique monthly visitors. Johnny Depp, the 2004 favorite, once again earned the year's top honors, followed by 2005 gossip magnets Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt (up from No. 5 and No. 8 in 2004, respectively).
Young starlet Lindsay Lohan remained in the top five this year, slipping to No. 4 compared to her No. 2 position in 2004. Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean co-stars Orlando Bloom (No. 3 in 2004) and Kiera Knightley (No. 4 in 2004) also fell slightly in the rankings, dropping from the top five to No. 11 and No. 8.
Newcomers to the top 25 this year include Jessica Alba (No. 6), Christian Bale (No. 14), Rachel McAdams (No. 17), Jon Heder of "Napoleon Dynamite" fame (No. 19), and "Desperate Housewives" vixen Eva Longoria (No. 22).
Available through IMDb.com's subscription service, IMDbPro.com, the STARmeter ranks celebrities' weekly popularity based on the actual search behavior of the more than 30 million industry professionals and film enthusiasts that use IMDb.com each month. The STARmeter does not reflect box-office performance or critical assessments. The list of the year's top 25 celebrities is an aggregate of 2005's weekly STARmeter rankings.
"The STARmeter reflects actual public interest in an individual celebrity," said Keith Simanton, managing editor, IMDb.com. "It may be to find out when they'll next see Natalie Portman (No. 9) on the big screen, or it may be to read the latest news about Jennifer Aniston (No. 12). This list captures a snapshot in time of just how much attention these stars attracted.
"It's also interesting to see who tumbled out of the top 25 this year, a list that includes Jennifer Garner, who was on maternity leave for a good portion of the year; Viggo Mortensen, who needed more than a History of Violence to keep his Aragorn standing of No. 23 last year; and Halle Berry, whose Catwoman turn last year kept her in the spotlight at No. 19, but is at No. 63 this year," continued Simanton.
