Adrien Brody (The Darjeeling Limited) and Jeffrey Wright (The Invasion) have signed to portray blues/R&B record exec Leonard Chess and blues musician Muddy Waters, respectively, in the Darnell Martin-directed biopic Cadillac Records for Sony BMG Film.
Shooting is set to begin in March, on a script by Martin. Filming locations will be New Jersey and Mississippi. Andrew Lack and Sofia Sondervan are producing for Sony BMG Film.
Joining Brody and Wright in the cast are Columbus Short, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Cedric the Entertainer and Tammy Blanchard, who will portray such history-making musicians as Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Elvis Presley, in 1950s Chicago, according to Daily Variety.
Leonard Chess launched the Chicago blues label Chess Records and traveled throughout the south, discovering artists and selling records from the back of his Cadillac.
Matt Dillon had originally been attached to portray Chess but a scheduling conflict forced him to drop out of the project, The Hollywood Reporter adds.
Sony BMG Film is a new specialty label that develops, finances and produces music-related theatrical films. Recent titles include last year's Feel the Noise, produced by Jennifer Lopez through her Nuyorican Films company.
