SAG to Begin Formal Talks on April 15

The heads of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced on Tuesday evening that they reached an agreement regarding the contracts with the Hollywood's movie and television companies.

SAG will begin formal talks with the leaders of the movie and television companies at 10 a.m. on April 15 at the AMPTP headquarters in Encino, CA. in attempt to avoid a situation such as the writers’ three-month strike that began last November.

"Now that we have concluded our wages and working conditions process and the SAG National Board has approved our proposal package, we look forward to productive negotiations," SAG national executive director and chief negotiator Doug Allen said.

The current contract of the actors is to expire on June 30 and SAG hopes to reach an agreement until then just as the Directors Guild recently agreed to a new three-year deal. The actors’ guild consists of approximately 120,000 members.

The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), which until last week has negotiated jointly with the guild, decide to break the alliance and negotiate on its own the new contract. AFTRA is expected to announce the date when the negotiations would start some time this week.

AFTRA shares more than half of its 70,000 members with SAG.

At first, SAG wouldn’t agree with March as the date when negotiations would begin, but probably the break up with AFTRA changed its position.

The writers' strike, which lasted 100 days, ended on February 12 as WGA agreed to the terms of the deal.
